Planners: Nicole Pavlovsky and Talya Olivkovich 6:00-6:15 People arrive 6:15-6:30 Icebreaker. Split girls into groups of 4-5 girls. Each round, say 1 word relating to music. After you say the word, the teams have 30 seconds to think of as many songs as they know that includes that word. Then we take turns, and each team sings 1 song that includes that word, then the next group goes and does the same, but you can’t repeat any of the same songs. Keep going around until 1 team remains, and that team will win 1 point. Continue playing for 5 rounds. Words to use include: music, sing, rock, sound, talk/words, etc.
6:30-6:50 Havdallah
6:50:7:05: Musical chairs. Split everybody up into 2 groups. Each group plays 1 game of musical chairs. Then the winner of each group plays each other for the 1-on-1 “championship”. The winner receives fake tattoos (like rock stars) and stickers (just for fun)
7:05-7:30 Song session. Choose around 5-7 songs that are good for singing along. If you have a girl in the chapter that plays the guitar, have her perform! Mor performs a few songs, along with Lauren!
7:30- 7:50 Guitar making. Get girls to bring shoe boxes/tissue boxes and paper towel/toilet paper rolls. Bring rubber bands, markers, crayons, stickers, pencils, scissors and tape. Print out a few directions and have it on a large table. Have each girl create their own “box guitars” and decorate them! While they are making/decorating the guitars, play music in the background!
BOX GUITAR Instructions (Project idea off of www.enchantedlearning.com) 1.Find an old shoe box, tissue box, or other cardboard box. 2.Cut an oval-shaped hole in the top. 3. Stretch a few rubber bands around the box and over the hole. 4. Put a pencil under the rubber bands on one side. 5. Tape on a paper-towel tube and decorate the box. 7:50-8:30 Song interpretation. Show the videos for “Where Is The Love” by the Black Eyed Peas and “What I’ve Done” by Linkin Park. Pass out song lyrics too. Afterwards, have a discussion about the symbols, images, and words featured in the videos, and talk about the meaning behind each part. After these 2 songs, show 1 more music video called “Uri Ur” by Aviv Geffen. This is an old song in Hebrew that talks about the Arab-Israeli conflict. Pass out translated song lyrics to those who don’t understand Hebrew. Afterwards have a discussion about the current conflict. Some questions to consider include: What sort of feelings or emotions do you get out of watching this video? Does anybody know what happened just a week ago and is still going on in Israel at this second? Why do you think Iran and Syria would want to destroy Israel? Do you think this conflict will ever end? How could we end the conflict? Is there one particular side to blame for all of the violence? Are Israel’s actions justified against Arabs? How do some of the images and words in the song connect to the current conflict in Israel? How do some themes of the Where Is The Love video and the What I’ve Done video relate to what’s going on now? Why do you think we would show you this video? (to show how messages and issues are conveyed through music and to discuss the current conflict) 8:30-8:40 VH1 Fundraiser. Briefly explain the organization, VH1 Music Foundation. $3 of the $5 collected for the event go to this organization, which provides music education programs in schools all across the US for all children 8:40-end Good and Welfare.
