El Al Dove Campaign for Real Beauty/Self-Esteem Night 2/21/09
Planners: Nicole Pavlovsky and Shany Albalak
6:40 PM-6:55 PM Havdallah
6:55 PM-7:05 PM Onslaught/Evolution/Collages/Definition of Beauty. First, watch the video “Onslaught” on the Dove Campaign For Real Beauty website and take any comments. Then show “Evolution” on the same website to show examples of how the media changes. Have a discussion and share any feelings that arose from watching those 2 videos. Then split up into 2 groups in 2 different rooms and have the girls in the group work together to write the definition of “beauty”. Then come back together and share the definition. 7:05 PM-7:25 PM Make two collages, one with pictures that show unhealthy body image, and the other collage with pictures that show healthy body image all from magazines. Glue it on to poster board, and elect 2 spokeswomen (1 for the unhealthy and 1 for the healthy) and present. While they are making the collages, pass out fruit salad (Cut up random fruit like apples, bananas, strawberries, oranges, pomegranate, etc. Mix. Then scoop into plastic cups and serve.) 7:25 PM-8:25 PM Jenna Welsh’s (Atz’ Chaim’s advisor) program. She is a counselor at an eating disorder clinic and formerly had an eating disorder. She’ll talk to us about various causes of the disorder, signs that someone is having one, effects of eating disorders, and what you can do to help someone if you suspect it. She’ll also share her story with us. She’ll give information about the Dove Self Esteem Campaign and it is the week right before National Eating Disorder Prevention Week. 8:25 PM-8:50 PM: Each girl receives a paper. On it she writes as many things as she can that she doesn’t like about herself. It can be about looks, personality, actions, etc. Then collect them, turn off the lights and read them (No comments allowed). Then do the same thing on another piece of paper about the things you like. After you read it, discuss the meaning and like how everyone has problems and there is always going to be one person that’s going through the same thing and that you can talk to them about it. 8:50 PM-10:30 PM: Good and welfare.
S'ganit's Notes:
1. We decided to change the programming on the spot at the event. We were going to have 3 more programs. 1st program: Get into partners trace each other’s body on a piece of butcher paper. Get into circle and pass butcher paper around. Inside people will write something about you that they like that has nothing to do with looks. This would have taken around 30 minutes. 2nd program: Paint each other’s nails for bonding and fun! This would have taken around 20 minutes. 3rd program: Put a mirror inside a box, and pass it around in a circle. Each girl says aloud what they see. Afterwards, have 1 girl come into the middle of the circle one at a time, and have the girls on the outside of the circle say all the great traits about that person. This would have taken around 45 minutes.2. Good and welfare took much longer than we expected. After such a serious event many girls have lots of things to say, and the discussions were really elaborate.
